A sufferance zone is a metaphysical pocket dimension created by Pomfrans to assist the deceased in discovering what their sins are and help them in working out their ontological hang ups. It's a useful tool for assisting the damned in recognizing their sin and asking for forgiveness and mercy from God.

Sufferance zones can take the form of a darkened room or an isolated recreation of a place from the deceased's life. The deceased may or may not be aware of where they are when inside one, as such zones have been created around groups of characters without their advanced notice.
