Short XXXIV: Take The Highway Home Arc XXVII: Why Do I Deserve To Die

In comforting Central over her recent falling out with Jack, Plato recants the tragic and perilous course of events which resulted in his entrance into Heaven and election to serve the angel.

Plato lived during the period immediately after an apocalyptic war known as "The World Was Made To Change Hands." He lived in a peaceful village until one day it was invaded by foreigners looking to add to their armies. When the villagers rejected their offer to join the new arrivals, they're are slaughtered. Plato was spared and taken hostage and then enslaved, doing menial labor for the army before he was sold to new master, political philosopher Mr. Grimm.

Grimm is busy trying to recreate the society prior to the war, and uses Plato as a housekeeper, training him in cooking, cleaning and repairing things. His master is eventually lynched by other furs who didn't want civilization to return. Plato is then bequeathed to Grimm's niece, Miss Amanda, who is abusive to him at first but eventually takes on a sexual relationship with him. She has other lovers too during this time, and Plato realizes his place in the relationship. Eventually the same furs who killed her uncle destroy her home as well, forcing her and Plato to flee.

Hiding in a boarding house, Amanda becomes sick with some unknown disease, possibly radiation poisoning. With doctors and medical information being scarce during this period, she eventually succumbs to her sickness despite Plato's best efforts. Even though he is now free, Plato feels an emptiness as he no longer has any purpose. Plato too becomes stricken with the same disease, and in his dying moments asks God if the angels needed any servants.

He speculates that how he ended up in Heaven with Central. Central is concerned that due to the circumstances of his life he may not have truly served his purpose on Earth. Plato dismisses these concerns, saying his purpose is now in Heaven to help Central. After some playful banter, Central takes Plato up on his earlier offer for sexual roleplay where she's the hunter and he's the prey.
