At some time in the distant future, and planet that's an Earth colony is being evacuated. Ted is a soldier that part of the detachment leaving, and others such as unit medic Artie and new meat Kedge plan to face a new threat.
The platoon lands on a bug planet, hoping to assist some Marines. It's understood they could be stuck on the planet indefinitely, and the whole squad volunteers anyway.
