Short XXIV: It's A Wonderfull Hell | Arc XVIII: Frightened Virgil |
Fnar is playing around the outside of Heaven when he asks a disembodied voice if he can enter. Despite not being a resident of Heaven, the voice agrees and Fnar enters where he soon encounters Sue Deer, who is recently deceased and looking for her brother Kenneth. Fnar tells her he was sent by Jack to look for his old girlfriend Jill, and offers to help Sue.
The two begin to explore Heaven, looking for some of Jack's friends that live there for help. They first encounter Trixi and Tet, who are gardening and playing with volcanos, respectively, in their personal Heaven. Neither has found Jill yet in their searches, and Central is summoned to help in the search. She first reacts negatively when she finds out that Jack is behind the request, but she seemingly gets some non-verbal divine command to help and relents, tell the group to continue to search for their friends while she searches herself.
The group's next stop is Buster Charlie's Heaven, where's he's engaging in battle with a fort modeled on the "Redwall" book series. The group questions Charlie, and while he hasn't found Jill, he has seen Sue's brother recently. Charlie's war ends with him utterly destroying the enemy fortress, only for a "Your princess is in another castle" encounter to render his attacks moot.
Next, Fnar and Sue visit the Heaven of Miss Mab, where she transforms hideous monsters into cute creatures. Mab and Fnar greet each other like long-lost friends despite never having met. They decide to split up, Fnar staying with Mab while Sue wanders away by herself.
In the fourth Heaven she visits, a nightmarish black and white scenario plays out. A young woman named Rachel has set up a Heaven for her abusive boyfriend from life, who is now in Hell for his sins, filled with victims and fellow abusers. Sue is horrified by this and doesn't understand why anyone would create such a place in Heaven, Rachel explains she's hoping news of this place with trickle down to her boyfriend to convince him to try life again. Rachel hopes that by tricking him, he might end up reincarnated as a nicer person and not want this type of fantasy anymore.
Sue's next stop is Rafe's Heaven, a wacky cartoonish realm where he's an overtaxed but rakish character seeking to entertain people with his writings and screwball behavior. Sue discovers he's written a book that contains all knowledge, and tries to use it to find Kenneth, but Central appears suddenly, having found him herself. Sue and Kenneth are soon reunited. Fnar asks Central if she had any luck, and she tells him she did not, obviously conflicted with her answer. Fnar accepts this and leaves Heaven for home.
In an epilogue, Central meets with Jill, who's Heaven resembles an unfinished comic page awaiting inks. Jill welcomes her and reveals the reason she instructed Central to lie to Fnar about finding her and she worries that Jack won't want to be with her anymore. Central assures her that he will.
